Product Engineering Intern

John Deere
Summer 2019

During the summer of 2019, I worked as a Product Engineering Intern at John Deere on the Guidance (autonomous farm equipment) team in Des Moines, Iowa at their Intelligent Solutions Group building. Below is a list and description of the major projects I worked on and skills that I learned during this internship:

  • Single Line Shift (Straight Track): Completed and Integrated
  • CAN Message Monitor: Started

Single Line Shift (Straight Track)

  • Description: The Single Line Shift (for straight tracks) was the major project I completed during my internship. It allows the operator to change the position of the current guidance track without affecting the original track or any tracks around it.
  • Results: I was able to work through the entire development process (requirements gathering, planning, developing, testing, and integration).
  • Impact: This project will help give operators more control of the guidance system for avoiding objects or uneven terrain, which will increase their yields.
  • Below is a more detailed description of the feature and a video demonstrating the feature.

    CAN Message Monitor

    • Description: The CAN Message Monitor project involved analyzing CAN (Controller Area Network) messages from the Guidance system to ensure that certain components in the system were performing as expected.
    • Results: I started this project with a couple of weeks left in my internship, so I was able to create the foundation of the system.
    • Impact: When completed, this project will give the operator more information about potential system issues that arise, allowing faster resolution.
